What Does an RV Septic System Look Like?

Fresh Water Tank—This tank is for fresh water, as the name implies. This is the water you get from your faucets.

Gray Water Tank—The dirty water from your RV shower and kitchen sink is collected in the gray tank. This tank may be missing from some used campers and older RVs.

Black Water Tank—This is the one that most new RVers are afraid of. The toilet waste is collected in the black tank. All filthy water is emptied into this tank if your RV does not have one.

Any of these tanks can pose problems if they are not properly maintained.

How Often Should RV Tanks Be Emptied?

The frequency with which you should empty your tanks is a matter of personal preference. You may need to empty your tanks every other day if you're traveling with a large group. If you and your spouse are the only ones in the house, once a week may be sufficient.

Before emptying your tanks, a good rule of thumb is to wait until they're roughly two-thirds full. When dumping, it provides a much better "flow," making the process much more efficient.
